Why Climate Group?
I was looking for a new challenge as an in-house charity lawyer. There were a number of different charities looking for in-house lawyers, but I chose Climate Group. This wasn’t just due to the important cause, but because of the people who interviewed me – they were friendly and informal yet clearly had a deep conviction about the work of the organisation. The immense scope of work was also extremely interesting and challenging for me as the first lawyer in the organisation.
What does a regular day for you as Head of Legal look like?
For over two years I was the sole lawyer at the Climate Group so I would do whatever legal work was required. I have now been joined by another solicitor, but my days are still very varied. I could be discussing a proposed agreement with colleagues or reviewing one at my desk. I may be working on policies, strategies and frameworks, or having discussions with external lawyers about non-UK legal questions. Some days I might be in the office near Tower Bridge, enjoying meeting colleagues in person, and other days I might be working from home at my desk with my dog close by.
What do you enjoy most about working at the Climate Group?
The variety, as well as the hardworking and enthusiastic people. It’s also very gratifying to be involved in a cause which is hugely challenging but is making a difference. Having worked for many years in central London, I also love the informality of the workplace and the hybrid set-up that means we can mix in a couple of work-from-home days per week. I don’t love the commute, but I love the office!
What have you learnt from working at the Climate Group?
I have learnt so much from working with colleagues in many different places, in understanding differences in negotiation styles and ways of working. I have also learnt to take time for personal development as well as professional development.
Who or what inspires you in your line of work?
I am inspired by being a relevant part of an organisation doing such necessary work. There is a “can-do” attitude here – people are constantly looking to help solve problems, get projects off the ground, and to achieve organisational objectives.
How do you stay motivated to keep driving climate action, fast?
It comes down to the people I work with – their drive and commitment to launch new initiatives, change minds and influence decision-makers all over the world is inspirational.
